Trauma. Just finished B&V. A very emotionally wrenching book. I’d also like to add that as a major literary nerd, I sometimes like to envision myself as a character in some of the books I read. As with Anne Frank’s diary, while reading this depiction of the Holocaust, I wished to be able to warn the characters of their impending doom. To save them, help them. To tell Henry, and even Virgil to not despair. The world does indeed need its howler monkeys. I can empathize with Virgil. During the Holocaust when the Jews and other intellectuals were in hiding, their biggest fear was in keeping their families safe. Poor Beatrice. If only Julian had a weakness. Very elaborately written, a truly heart-wrenching story.
